Before contacting a website, platform or commercial user, preserve the facts. Capture the page on which the image appears, keep the complete URL, record the date of discovery and save screenshots that show the image in its surrounding context.

Keep the evidence factual and easy to trace: screenshots, URLs, original files, publication dates, contributor records, licence notes and a concise chronology. Together, these elements reduce uncertainty and make a responsible review easier.
Good preservation captures enough context for another person to understand what was visible, where it appeared and when. It also preserves the requester’s own source and authority records so the observed page can be compared responsibly.
Record the full URL, visible domain, date, time zone, browser, device class and whether login, location or consent settings affected the page. Note redirects, popups, embedded frames and dynamic content.
Do not access restricted areas without permission. Do not use another person’s credentials or misrepresent identity to obtain evidence.
Capture the page title, surrounding text, image placement, attribution, visible commercial context and enough of the interface to identify the source. Where appropriate, preserve a full-page capture and focused details.
Avoid editing the captured file. If redaction is necessary for sharing, retain the unredacted original under restricted access and label the redacted derivative.
Record the file name, size, hash, capture time, collector and relationship to the URL. Store the item in a protected location and link it to the relevant occurrence or case.
A later recapture should be a new item, not an overwrite, so changes can be compared.
A screenshot documents publication context. Case verification links it with available uploader or operator identity, domain records, licensing information and other preserved records needed to attribute and assess the observed use.
